17th CENTURY PAPAL BINDING. A document wallet, 10cm x 26cm, in fine crested dark morocco with papal & cardinal arms to both sides, in scroll panels with fan spandrels & tooled double borders, marbled paper lining, attributed to the Rospigliosi bindery of Gregorio & Giovanni Andreoli and characteristic of their fine work. The crests are those of Pope Innocent XI (Benedetto Odeshalchi) & Cardinal Lorenzo Corsini (later Pope Clement XII), and this is presumably a gift from one to the other. (Rome, c. 1680). Innocent XI, the "Saviour of Hungary" was one of the most interesting and politically effective popes of the 17th Century, and a reformer of the church and Curia.
