The sitter (1728 - 1825) is believed to have danced with Prince Charles Edward Stuart at the ball held in his honour in Kendal. The Egremont born artist had a studio in Kendal where the young George Romney was apprenticed to him. Steele later moved to the United States. This work is illus. & described in Christopher Steele, George Romney`s Teacher by Mary E. Burkett, 2003.
