Horsemanship - Heavy Horses - North & East Scotland. Early 20th cent. manuscript in a readable ink hand, 60 plus pp. in an 8vo notebook. The draft of a book on the subject of the care and handling of heavy horses. Commences with "Oath of Horsemany" (taken when "receiving the grip" & the horseman`s word) with other chapters on "Horse Taming" (the use of aromatic oils etc.); general receipts & remedies for the breaking, handling, feeding and care of horses; "Breeding of Draught Horses"; ageing horses including a poem; harness etc. : together with a ring binder containing a transcript of same, photocopied research material on the horseman`s word & related matters. The author of this manuscript is unknown but it was onetime the property of James Nichol, a stallion traveller, with two original 1920`s references for him from Bardrill & Sauchie, these & 2 photographs of him with a stallion are in the binder. Fascinating record of heavy horse handling & management from the latter heyday of the Clydesdale horse in Scotland.
