ROBERT FORRESTER (1913 - 1988)

Our Carlisle sale of 24th June included some fifty single and multiple lots of oil paintings, watercolours and drawings from the studio of the well known Carlisle Artist, Robert Forrester.  The sale was held subsequent to the recent death of the late Mrs Forrester.

Born in Carlisle the young Robert Forrester displayed an early talent for art & at the age of thirteen he became the first state aided student at the Carlisle School of Art under the tutorship of James Atherton. After a year at the school he began a seven year apprenticeship as a designer with Hudson Scotts manufacturers of decorative container ware in James Street, Carlisle (The Metal Box Co.). The design studio emerged as a notable centre for artistic activity headed by Paul Greville Hudson & was to be the centre for a group of artists that predominated from the 1950’s with a distinctive style.

Robert’s love of the surrounding country & its people is manifest in the subject matter of his work. He painted the fells in all their moods & was especially sympathetic to working people & the activities of their daily live. Following the example of his older friend Robert Rule he experimented with bold techniques, in watercolour he used large brushes & sweeps of colour on heavy grainy paper & in old thick paint with a high impasto. Thus he captured strengths that lay beyond appearance.

In 1966 he was commissioned by Robert Hogg, the curator, to paint a pair of murals “The Fells under Glaciation” & “The Castlerigg Stone Circle” for the decoration of the galleries in Tullie House.  These are still in place.
