In their July book sale in Carlisle, Thomson Roddick & Medcalf offered two unique manuscript account books from the American War of Independence. Dated 1781 and probably kept by a British Army Engineer or his staff, these record many financial transactions involving British garrisons in the Carolinas. As well as mention of the garrisons, there is considerable detail of names of both British officers and officials and local contractors and employees, together with much other information. All phone lines were booked for this lot together with bidders in the room and on the internet. The price realised was £6,200.

Also in this sale was a slim rare 1792 volume by Maria Riddell, entitled Voyages to Madeira and Leeward Caribbean Isles. Rare in itself, this book was uniquely the property of the famous traveller and explorer, James Bruce of Kinnaird, to whom it had been gifted by the author. Bruce, amongst other things, was discoverer of the source of the Blue Nile. This book sold for £2,300.

A Compleat Collection of State Tryals and Proceedings in four folio volumes in rebound calf were published in 1719 and sold in this sale for £840.

Of Cumbrian interest, 15 volumes of Mackereth's Furness Year Book (1895-1909) made £480 and 23 Barrow and District Year Books (1907 - 1952) went at £440. A rare wrestling book, Reminiscences in the Life of Thomas Longmire, ex Champion of England by J. Wilson, published in Ambleside in the 1880's attracted much attention and made £400.
